Sheets and wrappings of connective tissue called fascia are considered an exciting frontier in massage therapy. Supposedly fascia can get tight and needs to be “released.” However, key examples of research either fail to support fascial therapy or actually undermine it — for instance, fascia is too tough to actually change. Fascia enthusiasm seems to be a fad. For more information, see Does Fascia Matter? A detailed critical analysis of the clinical relevance of fascia science and fascia properties. BACK TO TEXT
Deep tissue massage could also be a solution to all that stress life throws at you. Studies have shown that massage can increase the production of a hormone called oxytocin.2 This hormone is also known as the bonding hormone as it influences social interactions and creates positive emotions. Massage also helps reduce blood pressure and cortisol levels.3

AIS is a method of stretching. My husband, Kyle, calls it ‘Absolutely Insane Stretching’ – but it’s really Active Isolated Stretching. There are many types of stretching including Ballistic, Static, Dynamic, Passive and Isolated. I’m sure we’ve done them all as they surfaced as ‘the one to do’ at some point in time. Aaron Mattes is the developer of Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) and I had the privilege of studying with him earlier this year. Aaron has worked with thousands of athletes over the past 44 years. He is a wealth of knowledge and has a pretty good sense of humor too!

“It is your body, your session, your outcome,” advises Rotenberger. “There’s a fine line between pain and discomfort, and it’s unique to the individual.” What’s more, deep pressure is not the same as deep tissue. It’s a common misconception, Rotenberger explains, and in reality, a therapist that is muscle-specific needs to exert little pressure to be effective.
Acupressure [from Latin acus "needle" (see acuity) + pressure (n.)[31]] is a technique similar in principle to acupuncture. It is based on the concept of life energy which flows through "meridians" in the body. In treatment, physical pressure is applied to acupuncture points with the aim of clearing blockages in those meridians. Pressure may be applied by fingers, palm, elbow, toes or with various devices.

Inter- and intra-event massage is given between events or in time-outs to help athletes recover from the preceding activity, and prepare for the activity coming up. It is also short, and focuses on the major muscles stressed in the activity. It’s important to be open with your massage therapist about the level of pressure and discomfort you wish to endure. This may be different for certain areas and throughout the massage, feel free to communicate with your massage therapist before and during the massage. Some massage therapists find pain to be counterproductive to the process and expect you to speak up if the pain is too much.

Swedish massage evolved in the first half of the 20th century to become a whole system of physiotherapy, including soft tissue manipulation, movements, hydrotherapy and electrotherapy by the 1930s, according to Patricia Benjamin, another massage historian. It fell out of favor as modern medicine, hospitals and medications moved to the forefront of our culture's thinking about health. At the same time "massage parlors" that were fronts for prostitution gave genuine practitioners an image problem.
Swedish massage is rooted in Western practices of anatomy and physiology. To perform this type of massage, licensed therapists apply an arsenal of pressure styles that include stroking, kneading, striking, rubbing, and vibrations. Using massage oil to help their strokes glide, they focus the pressure along the muscles that run the length of the body.

Reflexology is an alternative medicine system that claims to treat internal organs by pressing on designated spots on the feet and hands; there is no anatomical connection between those organs and those spots. Systematic reviews in 2009 and 2011 found no convincing evidence that reflexology is an effective treatment for any medical condition. Quackwatch and the NCAHF agree that reflexology is a form of massage that may help patients relax and feel better temporarily, but that has no other health benefits. Our own Mark Crislip said, “The great majority of studies demonstrate reflexology had no effects that could not be replicated by picking fleas off your mate…And it has no anatomic or physiologic justification.”
If you are dealing with a serious injury, and don’t have a diagnosis, definitely see a sports doctor. “Massage therapists do not diagnose,” says Denunzio. “It’s not part of our discipline.” And while a therapist can identify and attempt to alleviate any tightness and inflammation in the body, if a problem area doesn’t feel significantly better three days post-massage, you should likely consult a sports doctor then, as well. Once a diagnosis is given, your massage therapist can work with that information and use massage as a helpful tool in recovery.
Wow. Adrienne Blackwood is a genius with the human body. I have never felt such incredibly firm and relieving manipulation of my muscles. I had been suffering for over a month from severe trapezius strains and neck discomfort from poor posture. Adrienne delved into what seemed like each individual muscle fiber providing both mental relaxation and obvious loosening of my wound up back. On top of the clear skill and professional training she has, Adrienne is super sweet, warm and inviting. I felt very comfortable. I would have paid double and I will most certainly return. Thanks Carolina Sports Massage.
